Exploring Embedded Stage
Directions in Macbeth
Students will recognize and discuss embedded stage directions in Shakespeare’s Macbeth by reading and annotating two short scenes; Act 3 scene 4 and Act 4 scene 1. Students will then analyze how embedded stage directions influence staging by performing a scene in small groups.
Duration: 55 mins
Space Requirements: A space where students can sit, write, and perform in small groups.
Age Range: 6th-12th grade

Witches, Soldiers, and Kings:
Physicalizing Characters in
Macbeth
Students will explore the different ways that status and prominent characteristics or “archetypes” can inspire movement choices in performance. Students will then integrate those elements into their understanding of the characters in Macbeth.

Stage Combat for Students
Students will identify key factors of stage combat (action/reaction, eye contact, and shared breath) through a demonstration and walkthrough of a simple staged slap. Students will then develop a story around the moment of combat using quotes from Macbeth.
